                                                     Spring 2010 Performance

On Sunday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m., the Hillyer Community Chorus, with soloists and orchestra, will present the United States premiere of "Missa Solemnis" opus 40 by Friedrich Kiel (1821-1885).  Born in Puderbach (northwestern Germany) of relative poor parents, his lack of musical skills and education was quickly overcome since he played piano by ear, improvised and composed although he was 30 years old before his opus 1 was published.  This fifty-five minute composition is dated March 1867 and is a beautifully sensitive rendering of the liturgy. The work will be performed by the soloists, orchestra and 85-voice chorus under the direction of Paul B. Conway.  The soloists will be Meg Risinger, soprano; Laura Williams, mezzo-soprano; Nancy Brenner, alto; William McCulloch, tenor; and Lewis Moore, bass. The performance is free and open to the public - handicapped accessible.
